When I was pregnant with our oldest daughter over 8 years ago, I never imagined that she would be born with curly red hair. Most people couldn’t see that it was going to be curly, but I could see the texture and knew it was there.
It only took a little while before people could really see what I was talking about!
When daughters 2, 3, and 4 arrived, I sort of expected red hair or curly hair or both.
Some of the curls have relaxed a bit, and the jury is still out on B (although, my prediction is curly for her, too!) But my girls definitely have some curls.
I’ll never forget the first time I realized my girls were aware of how different their curls were and that they they didn’t want them anymore. My oldest, at around 4 years old asked me when I was going to take her to get her “hair cut straight” like her friend. We immediately had a conversation about how perfect her hair was and that God gave her the hair that was meant just for her.
I also realized that I was straightening my curls and that was showing her that I didn’t love my curls. At the time, there wasn’t a great resource that we could sit down and read together, but now there is Dove Hair’s Love Your Curls book and it’s perfect! Dove Hair wants all women and girls to love their curls, so they launched the “Love Your Curls” campaign to encourage women to celebrate their curls and inspire future generations to do the same. The book is not only available in hardback, but also available online where you can customize your very own Love Your Curls book and download it for free (yes, free. Go download and personalize one for the curly person in your life!).
Did you know that girls are more likely to feel beautiful and proud of their hair if people around them do. In fact, my girls now compliment me more when I wear my hair curly than when I wear it straight!
Dove’s newest haircare line in helping to embrace the curls with the Quench Absolute product line with provides 4X more defined, natural curls. It consists of the Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner, Intensive Restoration Mask and the Supreme Creme Serum. The three part system nourishes hair with each of the formulas, infused with protein, nutrients and Buriti Oil, providing a nourished, smooth finish.
Having never purchased shampoo for curly hair for myself, I never thought to get it for the girls either. I don’t know why I didn’t sooner, but they love their curls and have noticed them not being as curly lately, so I let them try the Quench Absolute line on their hair. When I compare the above swing picture to this, I can really see their curls popping and having more life. Their hair is softer and less stringy looking too. And, most importantly, they are confident with their curls and I love it!
We continue to talk about differences and why we are all different. We embrace our differences instead of wanting to be like everybody else. We talk about curls and red hair and freckles and they know that they are awesome!
While at Mom 2.0, I actually shared a #BeautyStory about my girls and their curly hair and thought it was perfect here, too!
