Vegan Gluten-Free Dinosaur Energy Bites Recipe in honor of International Dino Day and Gigantosaurus

Who else has kids that are big dinosaur fans? I’m certain my girls know more about dinosaurs than I do. Herbivore, carnivore, omnivore? Yep, you are right! But, I love that they are big fans and like to teach me more. For example, they let me know that June 1 is International Dino Day! In honor of that, we are celebrating with Gigantosaurus, the DINO-mite preschool series airing on Disney and some vegan, gluten-free dinosaur energy bites! Thank you to Gigantosaurus for working with us to create this recipe.

Just look at everybody enjoying Gigantosaurus after enjoying working with me and making their energy bites.

About Gigantosaurus

If you’re not familiar with the stand-out new series (which recently became a Common Sense Media Seal Honoree for “exceptional family tv”), Gigantosaurus stars four fiercely-fun dinosaur friends who take preschoolers on exciting, comedy-filled adventures as they dare to be themselves and explore the world beyond their nests.

Every imagination-inspiring episode follows the group on a quest, as they face their individual fears and work together to solve a problem. As the inquisitive Mazu, playful Tiny, timid Bill, and courageous Rocky aim to learn more about Gigantosaurus, they discover they each have something to learn from him, too!

Vegan Gluten-Free Energy Bites with a Protein Punch

We had fun discussing what kind of dinosaurs might like these tiny energy bites (of course scaled down to human size) and figured that herbivores, omnivores and carnivores alike would enjoy them.

Gigantosaurus, a preschool show encourages exploring and learning, as well as fun and simple activities like recipes. As such, this recipe is a great introduction to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) for little ones. It brings them into the kitchen, has them helping with measurements and making a new food from various ingredients.

Getting Started

They helped me measure out the gluten-free rolled oats, agave syrup, dry roasted sun flower seeds, sunbutter, dairy free dark chocolate,  and spirulina. We talked about measuring out the salt and vanilla and decided we could just sort of “ball-park” or estimate the amounts. This is a great way to introduce estimating and looking at a teaspoon measuring spoon to approximate how much we needed.

We also decided to add some protein powder to get a little more energy out of our vegan gluten-free energy bites.

Then it was time to get to mixing it all into the big bowl.

Everybody got a turn pouring some ingredients in. And E got to help figure out how many turns of salt were equivalent to a dash of salt

The spirulina was fun to add. It didn’t make the energy bites as green as I had hoped, but added a nice “dinosaur” green touch to them without being artificial. Additionally, it adds a boost of nutrients as well.

Mixing them up

Once it was all added, we discussed the numbers on the mixer, what they were and what they represented. The girls decided that 2-4 was a good mixing speed.

Forming the vegan gluten-free energy bites

Then it was time to form the balls. Once one kid asked for gloves, they all wanted them. I was hoping they would get good and messy, but that didn’t happen.

They still had a great time talking about dinosaurs and making vegan gluten-free energy bites.

They did however decide to call them dinosaur poop. So, if you need some dinosaur poop for a dinosaur themed party, the kids all thought this would be a good fit! In fact they set up some fun pictures with the dinosaurs looking like they were doing their thing, but well, I think that makes them a little less appealing.

Get out some dinosaurs and let the kids play with their creation before they gobble them all up. I think they actually taste even better after a few hours in the fridge…if you can wait that long!

Gigantosaurus are available on DisneyNOW and YouTube, in addition to airing on Disney Junior and Disney Channel.
