Paper-Mate Plant a Pen

If you use pens, or work in a place where there are a lot of pens used, then you probably see them pile up in the trashcan.  As a teacher, I do.  And, I don’t think anybody really thinks about the fact that the plastic outsides will take forever (if they ever) to breakdown.

Paper-Mate has a solution.  They have come up with biodegradable pens and pencils.

Now, the entire thing can’t be composted, but the outside casing is actually meant to be placed in your yard soil or compost pile for decomposition.  The box shows a picture of what you do with each part.  So, there are still some parts that have to be put in the trash can, but it’s substantially less than a regular pen.

We planted the casing of one of our pens.  During the process, I explained what happened to trash that the garbage company picked up and why we wanted things that decomposed in the ground.  I’m not sure she totally got it, but she loved the fact that we dug a whole, put something in it, and that I let her cover it back up.

It will be a while before we can check on the pen.  But, in the mean time, I really enjoyed the grip of the pen as well and how it writes.  I’m a very picky pen person and I really enjoyed these pens.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Paper Mate and received the products necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

  1. I can’t believe that! I mean, it makes sense, but that’s really, really neat and I’ve never thought about a solution to a PEN. It’s nice to see big companies taking charge to make a difference in the world!

  2. Shoot, casing or no casing, I’m a Papermate girl through and through.
