Elementary Back to School Reading List

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

We are one day into the school year already! The third grade teacher already sent home her daily reading requirement of 25 minutes a day. Thankfully, our girls are book lovers and enjoy reading daily. They tend to use it as a part of their night time ritual which is usually when I also enjoy reading.

We have a 6 foot tall bookshelf that doesn’t even contain all of their books and yet they are always wanting and acquiring more. While they enjoy renting from the library, it’s nice to have some of their favorites and the classics on hand to read and re-read. Our oldest has re-read the first six Little House on the Prairie books at least three times and is working on reading them again!

I went shopping on ThriftBooks.com to find some of the classics and new reads for my now 3rd and 1st graders. They have asked for some new chapter books, and I had so many fond memories of these, I got them. Thrift Books sells used books at the lowest everyday price on the internet. They have an unbeatable selection of 7 million books, honest/accurate condition grading and features that help you find out-of-print and second-hand treasures.

The best part is that each of these books was under $4 each. I got all 6 of these books and shipping for under $20 (you get free shipping on any US orders over $10)! They arrived to my house super fast, too because everything ships within 24 hours. But, I could have saved even more with the Thrift Deals (aka bargain section.) Any title marked with a DEAL tag on the detail page is priced: 2 books for $7.00 3 books for $10.00 4 books for $12.00 each additional is $3.00.

You can search the site by title, author, keyword or ISBN making sure you will find what you are looking for. And, if you don’t know what you are looking for, there are many categories you can use to browse for books to get the best ideas!

On our list so far for the beginning of the year is:

Little House on the Prarie (series)

Magic Tree House (series)

The Secret Garden

James and the Giant Peach

Matilda

Charlotte’s Web

The Boxcar Children (series)

Ramona (series)

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

Harry Potter (series)

Several of these have already been read and are on the “to be read again” list because they like them so much!

  1. I really need to read the kids the Little House books ( although MM could read them himself now I suppose). I just ordered the family a copy of the first book in Chris Colfer’s new series, Land of Stories. It’s getting amazing reviews.

I had no idea my girl loves Little House! I am a Laura fanatic. Jer got me a super-cool book for my birthday this year that has the original story (written to be a series for adults in a newspaper) with a ton of info. from historical documents about the people and places she wrote about. In a few years, I’ll take your oldest on a driving tour to all Laura’s home sites! No one else wants to go with me. 🙁

  5. Oh I will have to check it out there! We are lucky too…as Carter loves being read to! I am always looking for new books for us to read! I love the ones you picked. I loved reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
