On Getting a Second Opinion, part 2

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

It’s taken us a while, but I think we are getting wiser in our old age. We aren’t listening to the first opinion of a medical professional if it doesn’t seem right to us. We want to have all of the knowledge. And we want to talk to all of the experts. (Case in point, our midwife experience versus the very medical OB experience).

Last month, Mr. Serious took the two oldest girls to the dentist for their biannual cleaning. After doing x-rays and the exam, they told us our oldest needed three fillings. They wanted to do them over two visits. It just felt rushed. We needed a little more information. Once again, the office made us feel like a number instead of two very important little girls.

Dentist second opinion

After that visit, we decided that we would start taking the girls to our family dentist. We have been happy with them and they never seem to go out of their way to do something to make a buck. So, we scheduled an appointment for our oldest to have those spots looked at again. Of course, the previous office wouldn’t send over the x-rays or any exam information. If that isn’t red flag number two, I don’t know what is!

Our office took new x-rays (free of charge) and did an evaluation (also free of charge).* They looked over everything and determined that there is only one spot that might need a filling in the future. However, it isn’t even something they would do just yet. Instead, we have a new plan. The biggest one is to use a fluoride-based mouthwash.  *This isn’t a blogging discount or anything like that, they have no idea I’m writing this.*

Oral Health Resolutions:

  • Brushing twice a day. Flossing once a day. Using a mouth wash with fluoride to help build up the enamel that has been worn away.
  • Encourage healthy snacking. Sugary and starchy foods slowly destroy teeth’s enamel. Every time those foods are consumed an acid bath starts, which lasts 15 minutes. Give your mouth a break and opt for healthy snacks instead of junk food. Stock up on pre-cut fruits, vegetables, cheese and pre-made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to pack in your child’s lunch boxes.
  • Drink water. Water is your friend against tooth decay; it plays an important role in removing bacteria from the mouth after meals and snacks. A simple trip to the water fountain after lunch can wash out much of the debris and food residue that bacteria feed off of to form cavities. Also, be sure to stay away from sugary sports drinks and soda!
  • Visit your dentist regularly to ensure healthy teeth. When you get your check-up, dentists don’t just clean your teeth, they also check for signs of other serious oral health issues. Even better, they can answer questions and provide tips that will help you keep your smile healthy and bright throughout the year.
