Geffen Baby Hemp Prefold Is Super Thirsty{Review and Giveaway}

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

When we started cloth diapering, I quickly discovered there were a TON of options and everybody had different opinions. But one thing I learned from experience from about week 2 was that I didn’t care for the synthetic inserts that came with most of my pocket diapers (they hold a stink and they feel icky on my hands). So, I went on a search to find natural fibers to replace them all.

At one point, I found Geffen Baby as was intrigued. They only did inserts but they’ve now branched out into products: wipes, nursing pads and fitteds are coming soon. They were looking for people to review their new hemp prefolds, so I signed up and was selected. When they arrived, I immediately noticed how soft they were. And, then got to work on prepping them (I cheated and threw them in with other diaper loads for several washes) and then put them to use.

They have both 60% hemp/ 40% cotton jersey and fleece. Of the two, I prefer the jersey. It just seems softer and stays softer. It’s like a men’s undershirt material and it was super easy to snappi (I couldn’t get the fleece one to snappi).

This is the orange XS on my girl at about 12 pounds. It fit her very well. With 4 layers of material through out, it is super duper thirsty. You know a fabric is thirsty when it takes two days to air dry. Yes, it does take longer to dry, but a small price to pay for a dry baby. Because, she slept about 8-10 hours with this worn both as a traditional prefold and trifolded in a pocket diaper. (Big sister is very affectionate.)

Now that she’s a little bigger, I can actually still use the newborn (or XS) diapers. Now, I just fold them in two long ways (hot dog style if you remember from school)

and put them in our pocket diapers on the lowest rise setting. It fits perfectly all the way up to the edge.

These prefolds are super thin. The top diaper has the insert bifolded and the bottom has no insert it in. You can barely tell the difference. And, you can barely tell it’s in the diaper when on the bum, too.

Double folded in a pocket, I only use during the day. She’s a heavy wetter, and the insert isn’t completely saturated at about 2 hours, but it gets close, so I don’t think it would work all night anymore. However, she’s also not a newborn anymore, and I’m quite certain would be better suited for a small at this point!

I have washed these prefolds countless times, and you can barely tell on the jersey one. The fleece one is a little pilly, but still is in great condition. What really surprised me is how easily the breast fed poo stains came right out. Most of the time, sunning wasn’t even required, but when it was, the stains were only very slight.

I think the only negative, if you can even call it that, is the long drying time, but again, it’s a small price to pay for how absorbent they are.

The pricing is also amazing. I haven’t seen help available for this price at any other retailer. And, the fact that is is 4 layers all the way through is even more amazing. I can’t wait to see what pricing they have for their fitteds as those are my favorite type of diapers at night.

The pre-wash measurements (you can expect shrinkage up to 10-15% with hemp) and the suggested pricing are as follows:

Orange XS (perfect for newborn covers/pockets and brand new babies) 12″ x 13.5″ suggested retail $5.52 Jersey, $5.72 fleece
Green S (infant and most pocket diapers) 14.5″ x 16″ $6.52/$6.72
Lavender M/L (older babies, fit perfectly in a large pocket/cover like flip) 16″ x 18.5″ $7.52/$7.72
Navy XL (bigger toddlers and XL pockets/covers) 18″ x 21.5 $8.52/$8.72

Right now, purchasing on their site is still in the works, but you can purchase at the Lovely Eco Chic, Dearest Diapers and Fluffy Rump and other retailers as well as on their facebook page shopping app.
