A big and warm welcome from this ’80s baby to American’ Girl’s new doll Courtney Moore™! When I saw that she was coming out, I was more excited than my girls. She captures the essence of all it was to grow up as a kid in the ’80s! (Scroll down to the bottom for our American Girl Courtney word search printable.)
Thanks to American Girl for sending us Courtney to review.
I’m not a gamer or video game creator, but so much of Courtney’s story is relatable. I imagine, like me, so many people, adults and children alike will find similarities in American Girl Courtney’s story with their own.
Courtney is the best gamer at the arcade. But she can’t understand why there aren’t more girl characters in the games she plays. When a school project allows her to create her own video game, the hero is a girl who knows how to handle any situation—something Courtney struggles with in real life. Whether it’s learning to share a room with her stepsister or supporting her mom when she announces she’s running for mayor, Courtney’s blended family has to learn to work together differently. It’s a whole new game for Courtney, and she’s figuring out the rules as she goes. Includes full-color illustrations and a historical “looking back” section.
Like other American Girls, research is at the heart of crafting her stories. For Courtney, a team of editors, an in-house historian, and the series author worked together to bring the ’80s to life.
Let’s nail down that 80’s look! You know you rocked that acid washed skirt! Buy American Girl Courtney now!
As all of the other full-sized American Girl dolls, Courtney™ is 18″ tall. She has blue eyes that open and close, and curly sandy-blond hair with side-swept bangs. And she comes with a pink hair tie so you can put half her hair up in a high side ponytail.
Layering is completely on trend with a purple layering tank top under a bright blue crop top. Naturally, they have with a wide neckline and an ’80s graphic that says “totally cool” on the front.
On the bottom, she’s wearing a high-waisted denim acid-washed skirt with a pleated yoke in the front, with hot-pink tights underneath.
Her look is completed with a pair of white faux-leather boots with scrunched tops and pointed toes. Who else knows this look?
Every item in Courtney’s world is based on the actual thing—from her Care Bear™ to her boombox to the pattern of her bedroom’s wallpaper. It’s a case of nostalgia to the max for me! The PAC-MAN™ lunch box, thermos and lunch accessories are a page right out of my childhood. Did you know? After its release in 1980, PAC-MAN™ became the most successful video game of all time.
Using influences from the era, the Mattel Sound Lab created original songs for Courtney’s cassette tapes. We had hoped the cassette player actually played the tape, but alas, no luck. However, you can put the tape into it and close it. If kids these days knew the struggle of a cassette player eating their tapes!
Ties to the 1980s:
Courtney’s stories explore themes and events—like women in leadership and the space shuttle program—that can encourage girls to stand strong and speak out.
The ’80s included several female firsts, like Geraldine Ferraro as a vice-presidential candidate and Sandra Day O’Connor joining the U.S. Supreme Court—plus, Christa McAuliffe became the first teacher-astronaut.
Courtney makes a great friend for playing with other American Girl dolls and a great addition to our doll lineup.
