Have you (Netflix) cheated before?

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Here’s the scene of my Netflix infidelity: a nice bath, a brand new homemade bath bomb, a flameless candle, an adult beverage and my Netflix loaded on my iPad.

Netflix cheating

I say I’ll just watch one show to catch up. But we know how that goes. Before I know it, I’ve watched two or three episodes. The question is, Do I come clean?

According to a new study* released today by Netflix, nearly half (46%) of streaming couples around the world have “cheated” on their significant other, but it’s not what you think.

Defined as watching a TV show ahead of your significant other, Netflix cheating was first uncovered in a study in the U.S. in 2013. Four years later, cheating has increased three times[1] and has become a common behavior around the world. This behavior only continues to grow with 60% of consumers saying they’d cheat more if they knew they’d get away with it. And once you cheat, you can’t stop: 81% of cheaters are repeat offenders and 44% have cheated 3+ times.

In a binge-watching world where it’s easy to say ‘just one more,’ Netflix cheating has quickly become the new normal…

Apparently, I’m a statistic. And, it’s going to happen again.

I know Mr. Serious has done the same to me, too. We usually come clean to each other, but it’s torture watching again as the cheatee because I end up grilling Mr. Serious to try to guess what happens. Cheating is totally not worth it for him because I end up torturing him with questions.

If I don’t cheat while taking a bath, it’s usually “sleep cheating.” According to the study “25% of cheating happens when one partner falls asleep.”

But, really, if he falls asleep in the middle of The Crown, am I supposed to turn it off? Because it was just too good. And, honestly, HOW DOES HE FALL ASLEEP LIKE THAT? I think the cheating is totally warranted if it happens mid-show. Don’t worry, I watched it again with him later!

Unforgivable or not, Netflix cheating will keep happening here. With shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Crown and Orange is the New Black, it’s just plain inevitable.

  1. We had to make a rule that if one of us falls asleep, the other can finish the episode. Last night…… I was snoozing 15 minutes before the ending!! 🙁

    1. It’s usually the hubby here! I finish if I’m into the show. If it’s more a show he wants to watch, I usually turn it off.

  2. Netflix has some decent content. When you find a good show it’s hard to resist sometimes. It takes a lot just to find the time to watch a good movie and when you do you try to get as much as you can because you don’t know when the next time will be.
