We Bought a Zoo

With a new baby at home, I’m not heading to the movie theater any time soon, but we have been enjoying some date nights with movies at home.

We recently watched We Bought a Zoo (which comes out on Blu-Ray and DVD next week).

The synopsis: Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children. Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living it in his own backyard.

Our thoughts: We are “feel good” movie kind of people and really enjoyed this movie. While it is definitely a family movie, I think our girls are a little too young for it. However, Mr. Serious and I enjoyed the story. It’s based on a real family that buys a zoo. But, more importantly, it’s a story of this family healing and getting to know each other again after the loss of their mother/wife. I think that’s really where the story is, and the zoo and the workers bring them all together to get the zoo open on time.

I enjoyed seeing Mr. Serious Damon in a family movie and family role. I think it suits him. And, of course, Scarlett Johansson is a nice maternal figure and love interest, too.

*I received a preview copy of this DVD to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
