I figured it out

Want to know the secret to getting kids to come to class on time in an environment like mine?

Don’t have enough desks!

Amazingly, with classes overbooked (we are talking like 37 kids) kids show up on time because they want a seat! Can you believe I’m about 8 desks short?

So, hopefully, when they rearrange schedules and get the class sizes down, I have a new plan.

I will have one less desk then there are kids in the class a la musical chairs.

Don’t you think that will make things interesting?

P.S. Of course, I won’t really be removing desks, but wouldn’t that be fun?

  1. That sounds like a fantastic idea. They should do that at churches too!

  2. Have y'all really started already? Wow. You guys start so early it seems like! Maybe you finish sooner. Regardless, your plan sounds like it will work…and yes, it would be very fun!

  3. Gotta love all the quirks that come with the first days, weeks, and month of school. It's my 5th year and I'm still not always as ready as I thought I'd be. Good luck 🙂

  4. That would be a great idea! What age do you teach? I can not believe there are that many children in one class!! In think it is insane 🙂

  5. Ha ha! That is genius! If you really could figure out how many kids would be in class every day (which really would be impossible), I'd say totally do it! Or maybe the last person to get to class had to sit up by your desk. 🙂

  6. That does sound like fun! Do you have a co-teacher this year? One way to get them to class on time….pick random days and have candy for the ones already in their seats, not just in the room. You can use stickers, too. Even high school regular ed kids love stickers!!!!!

  7. Wow! That is a huge class! So where are the 8 kids sitting for now? On the floor? Craziness.

Gosh, y'all start early by you, huh?

    DID YOUR School already start?

  9. Wow, I could NOT imagine having 40+ in my class! I have one class that tops out at 7 kids. I love it because of the lesson possibilities! Good luck with everything 🙂

  10. 37 kids..dang girl!! I hope they get those schedules figured out soon!!

  11. 37 high-schoolers… WHAT?
    Ha!
I would just walk out of the classroom.

  12. I hop ethat the class schedules get worked out soon. 37 students wow a lot! And they expect our children to run this world someday and don't take care of them! (backing off my soap box) – sorry!

  13. Genius! You may be kidding, but I might try this with my students. Granted, I'd probably be tempting physically violence in the classroom. But I like to live on the edge.

  14. Been there, done that–CRAZINESS!!!
But if you can survive those first few weeks of outrageous overpopulation with high school students, World War III will be a piece of cake!!
    Good luck, and happy grading!!

  15. that would be pretty funny! You could also assign them seats and then change the name cards around every few days to keep them on their toes!!

  16. That is hilarious. So what do people do now? Just stand around? sit on the floor? Skip class all together?

  17. Nice. I know I have a class of 35 next semester and my 28 desks won't quite make it. At least this gives me something to look forward to about having a class that big!

  18. This will work for a little while longer…I tell my kids that one day I am going to write down where they are sitting and that will be their assigned seat. They want to get their chosen seat so they hurry to class. It works for a while….

  19. yay blogger is working again!! but seriously i am pretty sure 37 kids is totally against the law!!

  20. I love the post script – like we thought you really would have forced one student to stand 🙂

I bet you want to some days though.

  21. Not enough desks? That's crazy! Glad it's working out for you to start class on time though! HA!

  22. Thats so many kids for one class.
A child can't learn as well with such a big class. I sure dont want Tristan in a big class.

    Cute idea though!

  23. So the first year teaching in my current district, I had the opposite problem. They had extra desks and nowhere to put them, so they had 87 extra desks piled up on the side of my room. No lie. They were two desks high and I think like four rows. And the best part is I'm a music teacher where we get up and move around the room and dance and such. I think at least twice somebody knocked a desk down. So safe…

  24. As someone who is habitually late, yes that would certainly make me hustle.

  25. My classes were always big in highschool. I always felt bad for the teachers.

  26. Have I ever told you how brilliant you are?

Because you always have the best ideas!

  27. I love it! Only missing out on a seat and not missing out on learning can make those sweet children hurry up to class!
