We’ve been very lucky so far that our girls love math at school and even out of school. Often they want more of a challenge. So when I was offered the chance for one of our girls to try out Revolution Math, I decided to sign up my 4th grader. But because she likes a challenge, I asked if it would work to set her up with 5th grade and they said to give it a try. What is Revolution Math?

Revolution Math is an interactive learning activity that combines live tutoring via webcam with an immersive, story-based curriculum. In short, it’s fun, it’s completely hands on, and kids learn from it! Revolution Math is great for students that need extra help with their math, or you can use it for bonus challenge math work.

Where does Revolution Math take place?

When you sign up for Revolution Math, you pick a grade, day and time for your child’s weekly class. I knew N would be able to use my laptop with a webcam, or iPad on Friday afternoons, so that’s the class that we picked. Once a week for an hour she’s fully immersed in the story and solving math problems.

What do you need for Revolution Math?

The first thing you need to do is register for a class. The normal registration fee is $49, but if you use the code SERIOUS, you will get 4 weeks of revolution math tutoring + a complimentary learning kit for only $5.

Once you’ve got your account, you need to verify that you have a laptop with a webcam and microphone working. Another option is an up-to-date iPad. N has done one class on the laptop and one on the iPad, and the iPad is preferred for her as she can use the touch screen aspect. You will also need to download a free program / application called ZOOM. Once it’s downloaded, it is used in the background.

You’ll also need high speed internet and possibly headphones if you don’t want to listen in on your child’s lesson. I liked hearing what they were working on, so we left the headphones out.

What happens in the class?

A few minutes before class the student logins to their account. Their teacher and classmates (up to 3 others) are also there. The teacher reminds them what happened in the previous lesson and then they participate in an engaging math game with their teacher/tutor and fell classmates.

Using the mouse or the screen on an iPad, your child and the teacher interact with each other. If your child gets “stuck” either with the math, or using the program, the teacher patiently walks them through it.

N had never done long division and by the end of the first lesson, she was estimating and performing math problems as if she had always know how to divide.

She also has the SAME teacher ever class which is really great. I was worried she would have to get to know a new teacher every week, but that’s not the case.

It’s also great that the everything is common core aligned, so what they learn and are taught will follow the same process they will learn in the classroom.

What happens after the Revolution Math class?

The tutor sends a summary of the class to the parent email.

This week the Order got some help from the Council. They had to cross the cloud chasm to get to the special Book of Realms. It wasn’t without perils, but they were able to get the book. We will have to wait till next week to see what happens when they open it.

N and I had a great session. She did a great job today. She understands how to divide by ten and multiples of ten. She answered quickly. I did help her with some long division and she was able to divide whole numbers with decimals.

It was a great session! Way to go, N!

The students are encouraged and inspired by what they’ve learned. I noticed her math confidence has really soared.

What are the points and gems?

The points are a quick visual way to see the progress your child has made at solving problems and working through the session. They also earn gems. When they have accumulated enough gems, they can turn them in for real rewards to be mailed to them; from something like temporary tattoos to a drone!
