The 4 Stages of Baby Spying and How to Avoid Them

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Baby spying goes through many stages. From the cuddly snuggly newborn to the can-stand-up-and-lock eyes with you stage in the blink of an eye. With our first two daughters, we had to go through the various stages of spying and learn as we go. With the third and fourth, we found a much better solution!*

The 4 stages of baby spying and how to avoid them

Baby Spying Stage 0: The Newborn

When you bring that new baby home, they will fall asleep and stay asleep for a while. At least mine did. I could lay them down asleep and peek in on them and they would be none the wiser.Just checking in on them. Even touching them or checking their breathing.

slightly mobile

Baby Spying Stage 1: The non-mobile

They don’t roll yet, but they are increasingly aware of their surroundings and your presence. You lay them down facing away from where you peek in on them. When you go to check on them, even if they are awake, they won’t see you. Your stealth factor is slightly increased and you are aware that you are going to have to step up your game.

Baby Spying Stage 2: The roller

Oh no. That baby is a moving and a shaking. They are fussing and you want to make sure they have everything they need. But, you don’t want them to see you and get all worked up. So, you go into stealth mode. You creep in the room, get low to the ground and slowly peek your eyes up over the edge of the mattress. Throw your arm into the crib and feel around to make sure they have their pacifier. Or their lovie or whatever they need. Then you quickly drop back down and sneak out of the room all hunched over.

Baby Spying Stage 3: The sitter and stander aka Black Ops

You think you are coming to spy on your baby? No, they are spying on you! Your baby is fussing, you slowly open the door, all stealth like to find your baby’s head looking out of their crib right.at.you! And then the bedtime clock starts all over again. All because you went to check on them.

No more spying

*All of these spying games are necessary and yes, we still do them, but a lot less often. Want to know how we avoid these games? We now spy on our kiddos with a Motorola Baby Monitor.

Motorola MBP36S Video Monitor Review

She’s a rolling, sitting and starting to stand baby and she has no idea when I’m spying on her! I can see her when she’s playing before she falls asleep and I can see her when she rolls over and is finally out.

Baby Spying 101

I’ve had a video monitor before, but this is the first one that allows me to remotely pan, tilt and zoom with a full color LCD screen! So, when she crawls over to one end of the crib, I can move the camera and “find her”. She’s never once noticed me remotely moving it, either. It’s very quiet.

When the room is dark (as seen above), the infrared night vision kicks in and you can still see the baby even in the darkest of rooms. Stealth factor engaged! And, as a bonus, if I wanted to spy on all of my kiddos at {almost} the same time, it is expandable up to 4 cameras with the ability to view two units simultaneously with picture-in-picture! And, while I don’t use it for B, it has a very clear two-way communication option, so I could quickly remind the older kids to get their little booties back in bed!

See it in action in this video:

Some of the other impressive features we like include the rechargeable battery that lasts, temperature display, flip-stand on the parent monitor, 5 lullabies and the range of up to 590 feet!

So, you can decide; do the stealth game baby spying dance with your kiddos, or pick up a digital video baby monitor for their room!

Are you an analog baby spy or a digital baby spy?

  1. We still have an old school audio monitor. Video would be great! Maybe we’ll put one on Andrew’s Christmas list 🙂

  2. I think I have this exact cam! Love it!! I don’t know what I ever did without it.

  3. I feel ancient thinking back ten years to the monitor that I had for my daughter. Talk about advances in technology!

  4. I was looking at these at a recent baby show! I NEVER used a monitor with either kid but I feel like I need to to feel like a better mom! Ha.

  5. Very funny 🙂 We never upgraded to a video monitor with our youngest (who is now 3) and relied on the old school audio monitor, but my daugter was such a light and restless sleeper that I would have loved to done a little spying!

  6. BWAHAHAHA! This would have been way helpful when my two were teeny. We had old-school monitors, which wasn’t comprehensive enough to stop me from tip-toeing in to check on them for all the reasons you mentioned above.

  7. I would for sure need this if we had another one…
I was always spying. Just wanted to make sure he was okay.
