We both almost passed out | Mommy and Me Monday | 823rd ed
I’ve been hot and cold on blood donation lately…surgery and pain had me not wanting to be in the donation position. But, N is on her running break between seasons and said she wanted to donate. She found a location close to home and asked if I would go with her. I thought it would be a good idea for to me to donate, too.
(So, yeah, more blood donation talk if that makes you woozy!)
We signed up a few days before the drive. There was one other person donating but we were the last two for the evening. My appointment was second, but since she is 17, they said they’d get started with me first. (It turned out her getting started took the same amount of time).
They quickly got me over and hooked up to donate and then worked on her questions and checking her iron, etc.
She got the all clear and was moved to the table while I was donating.
“Hi N!”
It felt like my donation was super fast. My person told me it was a little over 5 minutes. Having never asked the time before, I don’t know where that stands in speed of things, but I felt good. I got up, grabbed a juice and snack and then headed over to sit by N.
Hers was taking a little longer and she was in good spirits.
They kept having to mess with her needle because it stopped flowing. She was tolerating it well.
Then she said “I feel light-headed.”
They leaned the bed back, told her to squeeze her thighs together and then I said “woah your pupils are huge.”
Followed quickly by “I don’t feel so good.”
The next part was kind of a blur, I got hot, she got hot, they started taking my layers off, I got on the ground, they brought over a chair and cold towels.
Once they were sure we were good, they knew I had been taking pictures and they grabbed N’s phone and took some pictures of us “for the memories.”
Don’t we look so good? N looks transparent.
Here I am supposed to be protector and take care of her and instead, she went into pass out mode and I quickly followed. N said “you were literally the picture of when they go low, we go lower.”
We both eventually recovered and they finally got the bag full enough they could stop. It turned out her blood is so good at clotting that it was clotting in the needle thus making it almost impossible for her blood to flow.
We both had more snacks and juices than we should have had and I felt good enough to drive us home.
Once home, the family got quite a story and had some laughs at our expense. Don’t worry, we think it’s funny, too looking back.
We had to send a “we are okay” picture to the oldest off at college and my sister because her kiddos got worried when she audibly reacted to the first pictures above.
Will we give blood again? Yes. Will it be soon? For me, maybe. For N, she might wait a while.
