Do you have any laundry tips for large families? Laundry is one of the most dreaded chores for me. It’s right up there with dishes. It doesn’t seem to ever be caught up on. The basket is there just staring me down, almost taunting me. There are 6 of us all needing our clothes washed. It gets overwhelming.

Thankfully, I found a few hacks that are saving my sanity. These tips have made all the difference! I still don’t enjoy laundry, but at least it isn’t making me feel like screaming every time a load needs washed.

5 Super Simple Laundry Tips For Large Families

So here you go!  Here are my 5 super simple laundry tips for large families. Some of them might surprise you, others you are probably already doing.

Laundry By Room

The easiest way to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed with clothes to fold is to keep the loads already pre-sorted. Do kitchen laundry separate from your clothes.

Keep in mind this entirely depends on your personal bottleneck. If you actually enjoy folding clothes but don’t like the process of putting clothes in the washer and dryer, then doing larger loads might be a better idea.

This also helps us not mix all of the kid clothes together. It seems great in theory to wash them all together, but then you have to figure out which pair of socks belongs to which kid, making it take what feels like ten times as long.

Do the bathroom towels laundry separately from your own laundry. When you are washing these towels, or a particularly stinky load (I like to wash all of our workout clothes together), it helps to add OdorKlenz Laundry Additive because it provides complete odor elimination from such a wide array of sources. OdorKlenz’s formula is patented from earth minerals and non-toxic ingredients. Instead of covering smells, they are actually eliminated. This is particularly useful on extra stinky clothes, or maybe that one time you forgot to take the clothes out of the washer and put them in the dryer. Not that anybody from a large family (or a small family) would know anything about that.

It’s also great on towels when they get that musty smell. OdorKlenz Laundry Additive is formulated to work on the first wash.

  • Body odor
  • Remnants of mildew on fabrics
  • Fragrances from perfumes
  • Chemical smells from cleaners
  •  Urine from pets or children
  • Odors from spilled dairy products

Skip the Sorting

Sorting laundry isn’t necessary anymore. There are a variety of laundry detergents that won’t let colors bleed onto white clothes and still make your whites vibrant. I know it saves me a ton of time and stress to just throw all the clothes into the washer at once. It also helps the kids do their own laundry. They don’t have to worry about sorting before washing.

Wash Clothes Less Often

Some denim companies actually encourage you to wash your jeans less often, saying the washing machine can cause damage if used too often. If a towel was only used once, hang it up. Don’t wash clothes that are not even dirty.

Use Laundry Bag for Socks

Another big time-suck with laundry are the socks! I have a friend that buys a different brand of socks for each of her kids, that way matching and sorting is simple. Another friend buys all her kids the same socks and they all just share.

But my personal favorite sock tip – put them all in a mesh laundry bag. You could even ask each child to put their socks in their own laundry bag and then it is their job to match and put them away. And if each kid has all of the same socks, really, they don’t even have to match them up until it’s time to wear them.

Give Each Person A Laundry Day

If your children are old enough to do their own laundry, delegate and let them do it. Organize the week so each person has their own laundry day. This prevents the people fighting over the washing machine and helps you not feel overworked by doing too much laundry.

  1. My oldest is starting to put away his own clothes into the dresser. This small task is a BIG help! 🙂

  2. I have a husband and eight kids to do laundry for. I do several loads a day on and off while doing other chores so it’s not overwhelming.

  3. I do nearly the exact same thing you do! Now that my children are older (youngest is 10), they are completely responsible for their own laundry day. If they don’t do their laundry on their day (without good reason, they have to wait until the open day, which is Saturday. I do mine and my husband’s, the towels, and miscellaneous items. Everyone is responsible for their own sheets as well.
