5 Ways to Help Your Kids Capture Memories + Giveaway

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Kids have amazing memories. Except when they don’t! They remember going on fun trips like to Disney World, but don’t remember where they put their shoes. Really, they think they remember things, but their stories tend to quickly change.

It’s fun to help them capture memories in a tangible way so they can look back on them later and have a real reminder of what actually happened. And, let’s be honest, a reminder for you as well. (That’s just me? Okay, fine!)

There are actually quite a few fun ways for them to capture their memories. It will depend on the age of the child and what interests them as to their favorite way to capture them. My oldest prefers words and my second likes illustration! Either way, they are recording them.

Write a story complete with illustrations retelling an event.

Like the time I had no idea my daughter realized how her baby sister was born and wrote a whole story complete with illustrations.

N's story about B's home birth

Draw it out.

We like to use markers and paper to draw pictures of what we did that day! I write his translations and explanations on the back. – Lindsey from Red Head Baby Mama.

Write it out.

My daughter loves to write, so we buy her a journal before a big family vacation. She writes an entry each night or while in the car, and we end up with a great story to keep. – Julie from Balancing Mama

My girls bring notebooks with them pretty much everywhere and write journals about what we did, where we went, who we saw. I love finding their little versions of the way things happen.

We also make sure to talk about activities at dinner and our favorite parts. I find that bringing things up more than twice helps him retain it. -Lindsey

Do an interview.

The girls love being recorded. Come up with some questions to ask, or have them retell their favorite part of a trip or event. They love watching themselves on video and seeing their side of a story.

Film it, live.

VTech® Kidizoom® Action Cam

Put a camera in their hands. Let them take pictures and document everything. It’s amazing to see what they capture from their angles and what they see is important. And, don’t stop at only pictures, let them capture video as well. They are a hoot on video and will get some great footage (even if it’s a little on the shaky side!)

We’ve been using the VTech® Kidizoom® Action Cam to allow the kids to remember ad capture our vacations, trips and daily events. The camera features a robust, durable design and comes complete with mounts for attaching to a bike, skateboard, scooter and more. It even has a waterproof case, allowing for plenty of fun in the sun, sand and surf. And, it’s under $60.

We’ve used it around the house, out at the lake, and even on the lake on a tube ride (see video below).

It’s very easy to hold and take pictures. There are a couple buttons on the back to change the menus around and add some fun borders to the pictures. The only thing I found confusing is there is a switch that has to be changed to allow the camera to charge and then must be moved back to allow you to take pictures. Once we figured it out, we were good.

It was a little hard to get selfies out of the tube with the three of us, but we were able to get it done.

VTech Kidizoom Action Cam

We used it on the tube with the waterproof case as well as from the boat to capture pictures and videos (see below!)

The features of the Kidizoom Action Cam are:

  • A 1.4 inch color LCD screen, rechargeable battery, micro USB cable for data transfer and battery charging, and expandable memory up to 32GB with a microSD card. (To store all your adventures, a microSD card is required. Sold separately).
  • Includes a waterproof case for underwater adventures, mounting accessories for bikes and scooters, and a wrist strap.
  • Features three built-in games, stop motion and time-lapse options, as well as special effects including customized photo frames and filters.
  • Child-friendly camera can withstand drops and bumps and offers the choice of yellow or purple colors.

The girls had a great time playing with the custom photo frames and filters. The camera doesn’t have a flash, so it is definitely better with outdoor pictures.

I think it would be cool to have recorded the birth of my son from my point of view. My husband was deployed so he was on the iPad, my mom drove 6 hours, my neighbor drove me to the hospital… it would be really cool to show them all that later.
