Our church had a cupcake wars style competition this weekend. They took it a step further and had us assemble our own teams, bring the cupcakes already cooked and all of our cupcake decorations. We also had to select a Biblical theme for which to decorate our cupcakes. We weren’t planning on going, but our friends asked us to join their team, so we went for it.

They had already decided on a Noah’s Ark theme for our cupcakes. The kids did all of the planning and figuring out how the cupcakes would be arranged and decorated.

Our friends did the cupcakes beforehand (a dozen each of chocolate and vanilla), and we both made batches of vanilla and chocolate buttercream icing. The moms made the icing colored for them while the kids got to assembling the ark, the water, the animals and the rainbows.

Everything needed for Noah’s Ark Cupcake cake

  • Baked cupcakes (your recipe or box of choice)
  • Buttercream icing (vanilla and chocolate)
  • Food coloring (to make red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple)
  • Icing Piping bags and tips
  • Shimmer white sprinkles
  • Oreo cookies (split in half)
  • Reese’s Pieces
  • marshmallows
  • Black icing (with writing tip)
  • Pink sprinkles
  • Chocolate jimmies (sprinkles)
  • Sprinkle eyes
  • Vanilla Wafer cookies
  • pretzels
  • Icing pen

Putting it all together

I started by making some of the different colored icings they would need for the animal faces and the rainbow and water.

Two of the girls shaped the boat and helped ice the chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream icing. They topped the icing with small pretzel sticks to give the effect of wood slats. They also put a row of vanilla cupcakes with blue icings and white swirls for the water.

The other two girls a set each of lions, owls, bunnies and bears. For these they used sprinkles, Reese’s Pieces, Oreos, eye sprinkles, marshmallows, brown, white and pink sprinkles, black icing pen, and Vanilla Wafers.

Next it was time to use the remaining cupcakes to shape a rainbow. We went with more of an arc shaped rainbow as we were running low on cupcakes. They decided to use the remaining white buttercream to make the clouds and then covered it all in shimmering white sprinkles.

The girls won best in show after everybody that participated placed votes! They were pretty happy.

Random Bible fact we learned, all of the clean animals were actually brought onto the ark in 7 pairs and the unclean were brought in 1 set of pairs. I thought it was 2 of everything!

I couldn’t be more proud of the girls and how they all worked together to plan and execute their Noah’s Ark Cupcake cake.
