Mom’s Lessons

Our moms teach us a lot! Like so much of what we know. And, even though it takes us until we are like 20, or even parents ourselves, we eventually see that!
So, yeah, thanks mom.
One thing that was stressed to us was healthy eating and drinking. We had an understanding of labels on foods before most of our friends. We had home cooked meals for almost all of our meals (even hot homemade lunches at school). And, because of this, my sister and I know how to cook and eat healthy as adults (that’s not to say we don’t enjoy some Cheetos or candy every now and then). But, we understand it. And, we pass that along to our children.
We also learned how important it is to stay hydrated. We spent most weekend on a boat either fishing or water skiing…in the hot, Texas sun. She always stressed the importance of drinking a lot of water (we almost never had soda or other sugary drinks and those didn’t truly hydrate).
When we drove to Disney World, I made sure we packed a ton of bottled water, so we never were thirsty (although, turns out, you can ask for a cup of ice water anywhere and they will gladly give it to you!)
Thankfully, we all stayed hydrated and nobody got heat stroke or sick! (I’ve had it before…it’s not fun. And, firefighters freak out when they start to see the symptoms. So, DON’T LET IT HAPPEN!)
The Hydration Movement On The Nestlé® Pure Life® Facebook Page is asking fans to take a simple online pledge to drink more water. They can also enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win prizes and share their own wisdom through the Facebook mosaic.(ETA: Just found out this doesn’t start until next month).
Head over and Hydrationshare some wisdom shared by your mother!

Your mom sounds like a Mom Rock Star! That’s awesome that you had such a great healthy eating role model growing up!
Having grown up in the South myself, I have seen first hand what can happen when you don’t stay hydrated during the blistering summer. It’s SO important. I have always not been so great about staying hydrated. This is a great reminder to work on this 🙂
Hydration during the hot summer weather is definitely so important!
Your food upbringing sounds a lot like mine! Now that I’m raising my kids in the desert water seems even more important… a constant thought! Love me some water.
Yep, you can get a cup of water at any quick service restaurant! (The water from the fountains is filtered, too, so it isn’t awful.) I usually just carry one of those mini water bottles that come in Lunchables and refill it a lot! Much less heavy.
I tried the fountain water and it just tasted off to me….but it’s good to know you can ask for ice water….because of that I’ll bring my own next time and have them refill. I hate using all of those bottles.
We don’t go anywhere without water here in the hot georgia summer. great reminder how important it is to stay hydrated.
I am working on this constantly here. Choose water over juice or pop or other options. It’s so important in the summer especially!
I am very glad mom taught us that healthy eating was pretty much the only way. I am also glad mom taught us the value of a dollar. Was it fun going to work when all my friends had gas cards and car insurance paid for and could just blow their $5.25/hour on anything, no not really, but I sure am glad I am able to take care of myself financially now.
I am glad you appreciated the healthy eating. Grandma S also taught us to eat healthy and hopefully all your girls will learn too.
when we go to disney we use costco to deliver water to our hotel! you are right, it is SO important!
That’s good to know should we not drive in!
We are a big water family too. We really only have water or milk in our house. It surprises me how much juice and soda other families drink. Not judging, just surprised.
Yay, water!
We do have 100% juice in the house, but it’s only a little bit and watered down like 75%!
My sons generally drink milk or water… with the occasional juice or lemonade treat. When they were little, we never gave them juice unless they were sick and really needed to drink LOTS of extra fluids. Because of that, they are fine with water. People always seem shocked when my 4 year old asks for water instead of something sugary.
My kids won’t ask for water given the sugary option, but they won’t raise a stink when we tell them that they can only have water.
It is so important to drink lots of water. I need to work on that so my daughter picks it up.
I make sure to pack water wherever we go as well and lots of it. My grandson is always thirsty and I do fear he’d become dehydrated so it’s peace of mind to make sure you have it with you. Even when we go to the park for an hour, I have about 3 waters with me
Great initiative. I am crazy with everyone in my family drinking water. As a mom of 2, and wife, my family knows keeping hydrated is important in their health!
I like to freeze the bottle the day before because they enjoy holding and sucking on a bottle with big ice cube inside. As it melts they get the water and its ice cold. I stay away from fruit juices and instead offer fruit like watermelon, pinapple, or fruit kebabs
Smart idea. Do you have to take some water out or not fill them all the way so they don’t burst?
You can take a bit out, but its just cold water. Also like a day at the beach or park, I will take a gallon of water and freeze it the night before. In this heat wave, you would be suprised how quick it defrosts and its ice cold.
we were JUST talking about hydration today
